Tony Award-winner William Finn, known for his clever lyrics and musical style that mixes elements of pop, rock, R&B and jazz, has created a buoyant, uplifting evening of witty and moving songs that serve as musical love letters to people who have touched his life. Mr. Finn is best known for his Tony-award winning Falsettos (and recent 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee). Elegies is collection of tunes that utilizes his uncanny ability to write songs that are simultaneously hilarious and heart-felt. The pieces all celebrate the lives of important people in his life – they span topics as diverse as the 9/11 tragedy to losing his favorite dog. Especially poignant are the songs that discuss his mother’s last days and a song he wrote for the funeral of his goddaughter’s mother. The song cycle doesn’t dwell on the sadness of these stories, though, and attempts to remember their high points – to celebrate these people and their lives.
